My research aims to assess the validity of play as a positive welfare indicator, firstly by establishing whether there is a link between its expression and preferred and valued housing conditions. Next, we will investigate whether ability to play affects long- (moods) and short-term affective states using a judgement bias test. This will enable us to assess not only the validity of play as a welfare indicator in calves, but the importance of designing housing systems which allow for play on their welfare. In addition, we will evaluate the effect of preferred and valued housing conditions on learning ability, behavioural flexibility and resilience to minor stressors (novel objects).
