The Research Data Group is a unit within the Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences. Its purpose is to develop and maintain a shared digital infrastructure across experimental facilities and laboratories. The group supports digitalisation processes across research projects — spanning the entire chain from data generation, capture, and storage to data preparation for analysis.
A shared digital strategy and infrastructure across research projects reduces the need for individual project-specific solutions for data generation, capture, and storage. This allows researchers to focus more on the scientific aspects of their work. At the same time, it ensures compliance with data security requirements.
Moreover, a unified infrastructure makes it easier to compile data from previous research projects, enabling meta-analyses and the identification of cross-project patterns and relationships.
Key areas of focus include:
Optimal and secure data capture (core data) from equipment and systems in research facilities, including barns and laboratory platforms
Appropriate data organisation, efficient user access, and quality assurance from data capture to access — including continuous monitoring and validation
Contributing to the optimisation of resource use and investment planning to ensure effective data recording and management (e.g. in connection with equipment purchases)
Participating directly in research projects involving the development of software and hardware
Serving as liaison with central AU IT staff and systems, and providing guidance on equipment procurement where digitalisation is involved
