World fur congress to be held in Copenhagen

Scientists from many countries around the world will be meeting at the IFASA2012 congress in Copenhagen to exchange knowledge about the health, welfare, feeding and management of fur animals. The Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Mette Gjerskov, will also be taking part.

Denmark is a world leader in the fur industry. This applies not only to the production of high-quality pelts, but also to research conducted into animal behaviour, welfare, health, feeding, breeding and management. It is therefore quite natural that the next international fur congress is to be held in Denmark.

The congress takes place in Copenhagen from 21-24 August 2012 under the auspices of the International Fur Animal Scientific Association (IFASA). The president of IFASA is senior scientist Steen H. Møller from Aarhus University.

- At the congress there will be presentations by scientists from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Holland, Poland, Russia, Canada, USA and China, to mention but a few. The presentations focus on a broad range of disciplines and topics, such as the disease plasmacytosis, protein requirements and nitrogen intake, and the effects of body size and body condition, says Steen H. Møller, who in addition to being president of IFASA is also on the scientific committee for the congress.

One of the days at the congress is dedicated to fur animal welfare. Fur scientists at Aarhus University have for many years been engaged in research into the welfare of farmed mink (read more – in Danish – here) and how welfare can be assessed. The congress will be presented with a common European system for assessing the general welfare of mink and fox.

The international fur research congress has been jointly organised by Aarhus University, University of Copenhagen and Kopenhagen Fur.
